Detailed Itinerary for 6 Days Tanzania Family Safari
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport where you will be met by your Tanzania safari guide and transferred to your lodge in Arusha. This bustling town sits at the base of Mount Meru and serves as the starting point for most northern circuit safaris.
Spend the day recovering from your journey; relax by the pool, enjoy a garden walk, or take an optional short city tour if you arrive early. In the evening, you will receive a safari briefing covering the route, wildlife expectations and safety tips. Dinner and overnight in Arusha.
Day 2: Transfer from Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, depart for Tarangire National Park which is approximately 3 hours. Known for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab tree, Tarangire National Park offers a quieter, less crowded safari experience. Begin your first game drive upon entry, keeping an eye out for giraffes, zebras, wildebeests and predators like lions lurking in the tall grasses.
Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park, often near the Tarangire River where wildlife animals gather to drink. Continue with an afternoon game drive before heading to your lodge or tented camp located near or inside the park. Relax with sunset views and dinner under the stars.
Day 3: Transfer to Serengeti National Park
Depart early for the long but scenic drive to Serengeti National Park which is approximately 7 hours’ drive passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Along the way, you will witness changing landscapes from lush highlands to vast open plains.
Arrive in the Serengeti in time for an afternoon game drive. The Serengeti is famed for its endless savannah and abundant wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino). Depending on the season, you may encounter the Great Migration, with massive herds of wildebeests and zebras moving in search of fresh grazing.
Dinner and overnight at a lodge or tented camp in the park.
Day 4: Full Day Game Drive in Serengeti
Spend a full day exploring the Serengeti. You can opt for an early morning game drive to catch predators at their most active, followed by breakfast back at lodge/camp or a packed bush breakfast. The day is flexible, either return to your lodge/camp midday to rest or enjoy a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch. Your guide will track wildlife movements increasing your chances of spotting cheetahs, lions on a hunt, or elusive leopards resting in acacia trees.
Optional Activity: You can do a sunrise hot air balloon safari, offering you a breathtaking aerial view of the plains followed by a champagne breakfast.
Dinner and overnight inside the park.

Day 5: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast, depart the Serengeti National Park and drive toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. En route, you may stop at a Maasai village to learn about local culture and traditions. Arrive at the Ngorongoro Crater rim by afternoon. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and home to a dense concentration of wildlife. Spend the evening relaxing at your lodge perched on the crater rim, offering spectacular views into the crater below.
Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater Drive and Return to Arusha
Descend early into the Ngorongoro Crater for a half-day game drive. The crater floor is teeming with wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalo, flamingos and with luck, the endangered black rhino. Because of the enclosed ecosystem, wildlife sightings are frequent and diverse.
After a picnic lunch near a hippo pool, begin your drive back to Arusha which is approximately 5 hours. Depending on your flight schedule, you may transfer directly to the airport or hotel as you will advise.
