Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge
Kilaguni Serena is the best-known lodge in the park and the first built in any Kenyan national park. It has 56 guest rooms including five suites, many with private balconies overlooking the waterhole or the Chyulu Hills, a rock-built bar and a dining room facing the water, so animals come to you.
It is about a 30-minute drive from the Mtito Andei Gate, near the Ngulia rhino sanctuary, and it offers bush dining, breakfast on a rock called Lion Rock, Akamba cultural visits and dance performances.
Rates range from about US$210 to US$266 per person depending on the listing, and a travel guide calls it far from a budget offering but reasonably priced for the park. It suits first-time visitors and families who want a full-service lodge with a waterhole at the door.
Serena’s own price list for game drives gives a day drive at about US$70 per person and a night drive at US$85, while an agent’s listing gives higher seat-basis figures of US$120 and US$140, so ask which applies to you.
Finch Hattons and Severin Safari Camp
Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp sits in a forest of fever trees along natural springs and is described as the most exclusive camp in the park, with high-season rates of about US$1,300 per person per night. It suits honeymooners and travellers who want the very best and are comfortable paying for it.
A travel guide says that if you have the budget, you cannot really go wrong here, and that Kilaguni Serena is the best accessible alternative.
Severin Safari Camp, near Mzima Springs, offers tented accommodation with suites that have private bathrooms and showers, at mid-range prices that rose from about US$167 in an older listing to about US$356 per night for two.
It is rated by nearly 590 reviewers and suits couples who want a tented experience near the springs without paying luxury prices. Our separate guides to mid-range and luxury lodges in other parks explain how this compares.
Budget Bandas, Eco-Lodges and Campsites
Budget travellers have more choice than the headline lodges suggest. Rhino Valley Lodge offers bandas and a honeymoon Rock Room suite, Kitani bandas are self-catering and good for groups, and Lake Jipe Safari Camp and Eco Lodge in the north, near the Tanzanian border, cost from about US$76 to US$90 per night. The park also has three public campgrounds for those with their own equipment.

These suit independent travellers and groups who are happy with simple rooms and a basic menu. Remember that the park entry fee applies whatever you pay for your bed, and that some of the budget places are far from the main game areas, so check distances. Our separate guide to Kenya park fees explains the structure.
What the Rate Includes and What the Park Charges
Fees are increasingly cashless, so confirm how your operator will pay them. Our separate guide to money, budgeting and tipping explains how to handle cash and cards.

Choosing by Traveller Type
Two nights are usually enough to see the springs, the rhino sanctuary and the waterhole, and Tsavo West works well as a stop on the way between Nairobi, Amboseli and the coast.
| If You Are | Consider | Why |
| A first-time visitor wanting a waterhole at the door | Kilaguni Serena | A classic, full-service lodge with views |
| A honeymooner who wants the very best | Finch Hattons | The most exclusive camp in the park |
| A couple who want a tented experience at a moderate price | Severin Safari Camp | Tents near Mzima Springs |
| A group or a family on a budget | Kitani bandas or Rhino Valley Lodge | Self-catering and simple rooms |
| On a tight budget | Lake Jipe camp or a public campsite | The lowest nightly cost |
| Combining with Amboseli or the coast | A lodge on the eastern side of the park | Shorter drives to the next stop |
Best Time to Go and When to Book
Tsavo is generally best for wildlife from June to October and for birding from November to April. Our separate guide to the best time to visit Kenya explains the seasons.

| June to October | The dry season, with wildlife at waterholes | Book several months ahead |
