What to know before visiting Uganda?

What to know before visiting Uganda?

Visiting Uganda offers a unique and enriching experience, thanks to its stunning landscapes, abundant wildlife, and vibrant culture. Known as the “Pearl of Africa,” Uganda is home to the source of the Nile River, the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, and a rich tapestry of ethnic traditions. However, before you travel, there are several important things to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit.

Entry Requirements

Most visitors require a visa, which can be obtained online through Uganda’s eVisa system. Alternatively, if you plan to visit neighboring countries like Kenya and Rwanda, consider applying for the East African Tourist Visa. Additionally, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry and should be obtained at least 10 days before your trip.

Health and safety

Health precautions are also essential. Uganda is in a malaria zone, so it’s strongly recommended to take anti-malarial medication and use insect repellent. Other recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and tetanus, and possession of a Yellow Fever Certificate is a must. Tap water is not safe to drink, so always use bottled or filtered water.

Payment and Currency

Uganda uses the Ugandan Shilling (UGX) as its currency. While credit and debit cards are accepted in hotels and larger establishments, ATMs are available in towns and cities, with Visa being the most widely accepted card. Mobile money services like MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money are also widely used for daily transactions. However, the country is majorly a cash economy so it is advisable to carry some cash on you because it is necessary in rural areas and local markets.

Language and communication

Uganda has two official languages, English and Kiswahili, but you will find it easy to interact with the locals in English because most Ugandans can at least hear the language compared to Kiswahili. Luganda is also a commonly heard language; learning a few basic greetings in it can also enhance your interactions with locals. SIM cards are cheap and easy to acquire, and both MTN and Airtel offer good coverage across the country.

Transport

In Uganda fly-ins land at Entebbe international Airport which lies on the shores of Lake Victoria. From the airport you can transfer to your hotel using your tour operator, Airport Transfer Company or private taxis. Getting around Uganda can be an adventure. Boda bodas (motorcycle taxis) are common but can be dangerous if you are not used to them; always wear a helmet. For more comfortable travel, consider using private taxis or ride-hailing apps like Uber or Bolt, public buses and your tour travel company, especially in cities like Kampala.

Weather and Climate

Uganda’s climate is tropical and the country has some of the best weather in the world with two seasons, a rainy season and a dry season; however, it is relatively warm throughout the year, and even when it rains, the sun tends to shine bright immediately after it stops. There are two dry seasons, which lend themselves to being good times for primate trekking and game drives. Uganda also has two rainy seasons; therefore, pack a rain jacket, sturdy shoes and insect repellent.

Wildlife and Nature

Uganda’s natural beauty is one of its biggest attractions. From gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to game drives in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks, nature lovers will find plenty to explore. Gorilla trekking and chimpanzee trekking permits must be booked well in advance, as availability is limited. The country has 10 national parks with the famous big five animals (leopards, lions, elephants and buffaloes), 1,500 bird species and many lakes and rivers.

Culture and Religion

Ugandans are generally warm and hospitable people who always smile at foreigners and are willing to point you to your right destination if you get lost; that’s one of the beautiful things about Ugandans. Uganda is endowed with more than 50 tribes with different norms and values; it is important to respect their cultural norms. Modest dressing is appreciated, especially in rural areas and places of worship. The country is religiously diverse, with most people belonging to Christianity and Islam, even with this religious and tribal diversity, people respect and live together harmoniously.

Safety

Uganda is considered relatively safe for tourists, but like any destination, it is important to remain cautious. Avoid displaying valuables in public, do not walk alone at night, and stay updated on travel advisories. If you plan to travel to remote regions, consider using a local guide.
